Witchcraft Books — A Journey Towards Enlightenment Or Damnation?

May 11th, 2010

As the subject of this post asks… are Witchcraft Books a journey towards enlightenment or damnation? I’m not even sure I like the phraseology of a question like that. There are so many people in this world who see anything having to do with witchcraft as being “bad” or somehow “evil” — you know this is true! We encounter people like this all the time. I’m not making a judgment either way, but I do think people should have the freedom to learn more about wicca without feeling as though they’re bad people. After all, how can you deem something “bad” or “evil” unless you’ve extensively studied it? You be the judge…

Maybe you’ll realize that wicca and witchcraft aren’t really for you. That’s okay. Not everyone is comfortable with this type of religion. But the fact that you’re here shows you have some curiosity and interest in the subject. Don’t let yourself be blinded by fear or intimidation. Do research, read witchcraft books… become literate about the subject. Don’t just make assumptions.

Traditions of Wicca

Wiccan Traditions

For some of us Wicca is a solitary religion, something that we have taught ourselves through groups, books or even the internet. Whether you grew up in a Wiccan family or were initiated the traditional way through a coven, it is important to understand all of the Wiccan traditions.

Gardenerian Wicca

Gerald Gardener’s traditional way honors Cernunnos as the lord and Aradia as the lady. This path of Wicca is formal with skyclad worship and degrees of initiation with the covens having no more than thirteen members in each. The covens are led by a high priestess with a high priest. Gardenerians are not too impressed by self initiation in other forms of Wicca because they believe that it takes a witch to make a witch.

Alexandrian Wicca

Founded in the 1960’s by Alex and Maxine Saunders, Alexandrian Wicca is a formal, structured, neo-Gardenerian tradition. Both Gardenerian and Alexandrian Wicca are regarded as Classical Wicca.

British Traditional Wicca

This type of Wicca is similar to Gardenerian Wicca, also formal and structured but mixes Celtic deities and spirituality as well.

Celtic Wicca

Celtic Wicca incorporates Celtic Gods and Goddesses with spirituality, green witchcraft and faery magic.

Dianic Wicca

This tradition is centered around the Goddess Diana that doesn’t include gods. Dianic Wicca is often thought of as a feminist, even lesbian path, although there are male Dianic Witches. This path does not require initiations.

Faery Wicca

This Irish tradition is similar to Celtic Wicca focusing on green witchcraft and faery magic.

Teutonic Wicca

Teutonic Wicca incorporates deities, symbolism and practices from the Nordic tradition including Germanic and Norse cultures.

Family Traditions

Generations of witches having their secret practices and traditions.

Oxymorphic Groups

Satanic Wiccans and Christian Wiccans ARE NOT Wiccan whether they mean well or not. It is a contradiction in terms

Although some witches believe that each individual must have been taught the craft by a living relative before being considered as a hereditary witch, however, I believe that being a witch can be inherited from a grandparent who may or not be living. The natural gift to witchcraft appears to skip a generation in many cases. There are countless reports of young witches receiving spirit messages from their ancestors showing guidance on the witches’ path or discovering information that points to an ancestor being a witch.

Paganism

Paganism covers many faiths, one being Wicca. Wiccans respect others in their beliefs and value the freedom of worship for everyone. Wiccans are polythesists who incorporate various Gods and Goddesses into their rituals. Most witches believe in reincarnation, hence the representation of the seasons, birth, death and rebirth. Some Wiccans believe we rest in Summerlands before being reincarnated. Summerlands is the place where we are reunited with our families and loved ones.

Wiccans do not believe in hell or the devil. Wiccans choose to refrain from negativity by being positive. We hold an individual responsible for their own evil actions.

Many witches honor the lord Horned God, the Lord of Animals, the sylvan lord of the greenwood. He is otherwise known as Pan, Herne or Cernunnos, a man with horns who is a great god of herds and fertility.

Some witches believe in angels, some faeries and some also believe in dragons. Each to their own.

The Candle Craft of Wicca & Witch Spell Casters

May 4th, 2010

Candle craft, whether Wicca or witch, is an extremely powerful form of spell casting. It is accessible, flexible and easy to fit into most people’s lifestyles. It uses the force of the universal element of fire and brings all of fire’s potent qualities with it – its strength, it’s power to destroy (good for banishing spells) and its ability to shed light into the dark. Here are some tips on how to use candle craft for Wicca, witch spells or even if you are a beginner.

How to Work With Spell Candles

Prepare a quiet space to work in and make sure that you remain undisturbed if possible. Place your candle in its holder and then focus on getting yourself into the right frame of mind for casting. I use meditation for this purpose but a long soak in a scented bath can also work wonders! When you feel relaxed and totally open you are ready to begin.

Concentrate on the flame and watch the way the way it flickers. Become absorbed in every part of it. You will then be ready to read out your prepared spell if you have one. If not, you can simply repeat what you wish to occur over in your mind or out loud and visualise it really happening. This will build energies and start to give you a feel for what is possible for you to achieve.

How to Prepare a Spell Candle

Spell candles can be anointed in a special oil that will add to the potency of your spell. These are available to buy and all you need do is dress the candle with the oil before you start your work. You can also roll your candle in some herbs after anointing so seek out which herbs are relevant to the affect you wish to achieve.

Candle craft for Wicca or witch casters can also include inscribing your candle with symbols or words that strengthen the message. If it is a love spell for example, you may wish to draw a love heart.

Banishing Spells with Candles

The destructive power of fire can be harnessed for good use and used to perform banishing spells. If you need to target negativity in your life then this is just what you need. It can be aimed at feelings, a place or even a particular person if you feel they are sending you bad energies but do not attempt to send the energy back to them. It should not be about revenge but about making room in your life for the positive again.

Prepare some personal words to read as you sit in front of the candle, if you wish. Then blow the candle out and watch as the smoke carries the negative energies up and away from you and your life.

A Candle Spell Ritual

If you do not have the time to experience the whole candle in one go this does not prevent you from getting all of the power from your spell candle. In fact it can be very beneficial to make a ritual out of it and perform your spell over a week. Choose the same time every evening if you can and this will help to really build the atmosphere. Your energies will be fresh as you are doing this in short bursts and you will also be building extra energy as you will be thinking about your spell all week.

I hope you can see that there is something for everyone in the candle spell. It is the perfect way to get started in some simple spells and a lot of fun too. The candle craft of Wicca and witch casters of course can be a lot more complex but I doubt many resist the temptation to return occasionally to enjoy such perfect simplicity!

Astrology in Wicca

May 4th, 2010

Most witches have some belief in astrology. We accept that the position of the planets influences our birth which determines who we are and our future lives. It must be remembered that they are only influences, other factors such as free will, genetics and chance are also at play.

To understand astrology, your birth chart is a good place to start. Your natal chart is person specific based on date, time and your place of birth. An astrologer would be able to interpret many things from this to accurately tell you things about yourself and your life.

Having your birth chart done professionally can be very expensive, however, there are books which can help you to do your own. The results can be very revealing. Natal charts can also be accessed on the internet.

Your birth chart could help you realize if you have lived before. If your chart has a lack of Karma, it could indicate that your are a new soul. Lots of Karma is a sure fire indicator of an Old Soul.

As long ago as 30000 BC early humans have been charting the stars. Chaldeans from Assyria first recorded that stars ran in a particular order, while planets moved around. As planets passed in front of the fixed stars, constellations, the events of humans seemed to link with the planet involved. When Mars was visible, humans seemed ready for battle, while when Venus was visible, it seemed to promote peace. Mars known as the God of War and Venus, The Goddess of Love. Astrology as we know it today began around 700 BC.

Over longer periods of time, more relationships between the positioning of the stars and planets were observed and verified. It became clear that this foresight could be used as an advantage for rulers, countries and kingdoms. Astrology is here to stay.

The Sun Signs dominate everything. It is the part of yourself that you show to others and is hard to hide. Your sun sign is the one you read in the newspapers about your horoscope. You are able to share some characteristics of the sign next to yours if you are on the cusp, ie. a few days away from the sign closest to you.

The sky is divided into 12, each sector being known as a house. Houses cover each area of human development. Depending on which planet or constellation lies in which house, we can gather clues to the area that will be influenced. The planet in the house shows how something will manifest while the constellation shows the manner of its manifestation.

Your First Steps As a Wicca Beginner

May 4th, 2010

To a Wicca beginner it must seem as if the information out there is endless. I have a mixture of envy and sympathy for you! One the one hand being a Wicca beginner is exciting and life changing. There is nothing like the thrill of discovering ancient wisdoms and learning to feel and channel the powers and energies in the world around you. And yet I can sympathise also as I can remember being overwhelmed by how much I had to learn and doubtful that I’d ever make any headway. So to help you on your way on this exciting journey, here’s 5 tips to get you started.

1) Many Wicca beginners cite spell casting as one their primary reasons for seeking the faith out. And there is no doubt that it is one of the most fun and life affirming aspects of Wicca. It is not simple however, and you must realise that it’s a skill as much as a way of channelling ‘mystical powers’. You need to learn how to appreciate the powers that lie within you and what your personal style is and so set time aside for a simple, weekly spell session to see how you progress.

Go for something simple such as a spell for bringing positive energies into the next 7 days. See if you can tap into these feelings and draw the positivity of others towards you. This will give you a feel for energies, the spirits of the elements, the potential that lies within you and last but not least, help you to see just how much fun performing magik can be!

2) The 5 universal elements are central to the faith and the Wicca beginner needs to start to introduce these elements into their life and spell work as soon as possible. These elements are the gifts of air, fire, water, earth and the spirit (this represents you and your place on the earth). These elements have different powers and characteristics and so you will need to start to recognise and respect them. An important part of Wicca is the belief that expended energies will come back to you with three times the force and so it makes sense to ensure that the energy you send out there is always positive. Try to start making a habit out of giving something back to the universe when you can, from an act of kindness to dropping money in the charity box.

3) Seek out a quiet spot for performing your spell work or for your mediation and reflections. It is good to find somewhere where you feel comfortable and safe and that it starts to become part of a ritual in itself. As a Wicca beginner you’ll only need a few tools for a makeshift altar. A bowl for water, a candle, incense and some salt will often suffice for a basic altar but include something personal (photo or favourite piece of jewellery for example) until you start to feel truly at home.

4) Find local resources or groups (covens). You will be welcomed and initiated as well as trained in the particular ways of the coven you have chosen. If you are lucky enough to have a variety of different traditions near to your home then talk to them all to see if you are drawn to one more than the others. However, not everyone has such luxury and so it is equally fine to consider yourself a solitary. For this I recommend going online and joining groups and forums. You will find that people are happy to share their knowledge and experience.

5) Be realistic about what you expect to happen as a Wicca beginner. You will NOT be able to create miracles and you should not attempt to bend the free will of others. If you feel that these may be behind your reasons for wanting to embrace Wicca then you may need to think on this some more. You WILL need to consider Wicca as a lifestyle practise and faith so be prepared to work at it. The rewards will come to you in time.

So, just remember this; being a Wicca beginner is much like driving – everyone was a learner once! You may feel there’s too much to take on at first but take your time and enjoy starting to see the possibilities of what is around you. You will soon start to adopt the Wiccan ways as a natural part of your life.

Tips For Practicing Wicca Free Spells, How to Make Your Own

May 4th, 2010

Here are a few tips for practicing wicca, free spells and how to make your own. Follow these tips while creating your spells and performing your spells. Wicca, free spells and how to make them is actually fairly simple once you understand basic principles about spell work and the elements of creating spells. Follow these tips for practicing wicca free spells, how to make your own.

1. Understand that everything is energy, and every energy has a specific vibration. Take the time to study the different vibrations of specific herbs, plants, trees, rocks, colors, metals, and symbols. These vibrations are the key to successful spells. You wouldn’t want to use the color black in a love spell. Once you understand the vibrations of each type of herb, plant, rocks and other aspects of the tools you use for spell work, you can begin to instantly know what to use in your spells in order to get your desired outcome.

2. The words you use don’t have to rhyme. They can, but they don’t have to. They need to be about what you wish to attract to you or about the desired outcome. It could be something simple such as “diamond, diamond bring to me, wealth and abundance and pure as thee.” Try to use words that cause you to think and feel about that thing which you desire. Emotion is your vibrational contribution to the spell. Choose words that help create and sustain the necessary and appropriate emotion.

3. Once you understand these two aspects of wicca free spells, you can start making your own spells. The hardest part is doing the study and research to learn about the herbs and plants, rocks, and other attributes of different physical tools you will use in your ritual.

These are the basic aspects of creating your own spells. It can be easier to simply look up a spell, however, it doesn’t serve you as much as learning how to create your own. It will take you time to study the different plants and herbs and colors and such in order to create your own wicca free spells, however, once you develop the understanding you then have the ability to instantly create spells in seconds. With the proper training, you will never need to look for another spell again because you will be able to make your own wicca free spells.

Draconian Wicca – What is it?

May 4th, 2010

There are many ways in which dragons emerge from the realm of the occult. We see dragon symbolism both literally in paintings and figurines and figuratively in legend and lore. Dragons have been making history since the beginning of time, no matter which religion or theory you subscribe to.

Paganism has also been around since the beginning of time and Pagan belief is filled with the mystical creatures. Pagans have always worshipped the gods and goddesses of their culture, as well as nature, which they believe to be the manifestation of their deities. One of the best known modern Pagan practices is Wicca.

I am quite familiar with Wicca, but recently in my studies, I’ve come across an unfamiliar branch (at least to me) called Draconian Wicca. While Wiccans focus on gods and goddesses, Draconian Wiccans focus on, as you may have figured out, dragons, with the dragon representing both god and goddess, light and dark, and most of all, balance. Where in all traditions, dragons represent wisdom and power, those who follow The Dragon Path take it one step further, appointing the dragon as All-That-Is and incorporating ceremonial magick.

So while not actually defined as a tradition of Wicca, Draconian Wicca shares many of its defining elements. It has a code of honor and its own holidays and festivals. Like traditional Wicca, different dragons represent the different elements (earth, air, water, fire), all of which may be worked with in different ways for different purposes. There are also clergy and like most religions, it is thought that the best way of passing down the tradition is from teacher to student.

Draconian Wicca has its own spiritual guides as well. People who believe can chat with and even befriend dragons. As the creatures live on astral planes, the communication is magical.

For more information on dragons, check out your local occult bookstore for Llewellyn’s Dancing with Dragons: Invoke the Ageless Wisdom and Power and Mystical Dragon Magick: Teachings of the Five Inner Rings by D.J. Conway and Three Moon’s Media’s Sea, Land, Sky: A Dragon Magick Grimoire by Parker J. Torrence.

Whatever path you choose to follow, I hope it leads to you where you need to be. Blessed be.

Guidance For Wicca Beginners

May 4th, 2010

Wicca beginners have a long, exciting and eventful journey ahead of them, – a path brimming with greater knowledge and a new way of life. With so much ahead it is no wonder that people can find themselves a little lost and overwhelmed. If you are lucky enough to live near a group or coven that you can join and be tutored by then you will already be well on your way to your new lifestyle. However, for many Wicca beginners it is not as simple as that. Geography to loved ones’ own religious beliefs may prevent you from joining with others and openly declaring your new course.

Yet you should never feel precluded from this wonderful religion nor hindered in your ability to follow it. There is a wealth of information out there to learn from and nothing should hold you back from learning to honour and become at one with the world around you. But seeing as this is what often confuses the Wicca beginner in the first place, here are some ideas and basic explanations to get you started and whet your appetite for more!

What Does Wicca Represent?

This is very personal thing and every Wiccan will give you a different account of why they believe and what it has brought into their lives. Every Wiccan will have a love of the earth and its universal elements. Water, air, fire and earth will come to represent beauty, synergy and power to every Wicca beginner. It is about recognizing, channeling and connecting with the earth and its rich offerings – the gifts of Mother Nature. You will move and change along with the seasons and all of the associated festivals. Above all, Wicca is about peace and joy.

Why is it a religion?

While it is not a religion in the form than many people perceive a religion should take, Wicca is a religion due to it having been derived from Paganism. It takes on similar symbolism, belief systems and of course Gods and Goddesses. It is not prescriptive like many religions are and Wicca will not tell you how to live your life but it does help you to understand the world around you and make sense of the purpose of life.

What is the difference between Wicca and witchcraft?

Occasionally you will find differing answers to this question but as a Wicca beginner, the details of this shouldn’t concern you too much. To most, Wicca is the religious part of the lifestyle and those who practice it refer to themselves as Wicca or Wiccan rather than witch. They are more likely to be part of a coven, or group, and follow more rules. However, the name Wicca was introduced to distinguish it from the stigma associated with witchcraft and many aspects of the Wiccan and witch’s lives are very similar. The terms can be interchangeable.

The Wiccan Rede

Wicca is a peaceful and gentle way of life that encourages respect. For this reason selfish, manipulative or sinister intentions are very much frowned upon. A small minority of Wicca beginners take an interest because they seek power over others but will soon come across one of the very few rules, The Wiccan Rede – “An it harm none, do as ye will”. This means you are largely free to practice as you please but remember to embrace the earth’s power for good rather than cause harm or hurt to others. This leads us to the 3 fold law which states that all that you do will come back to you 3 times as powerful. In other words, be careful what you wish for!

Will I need to worship any Gods or Goddesses?

No but it is quite a significant part of the ideology and history. They also need to be understood as part of the worship of male and female. Many Wiccans will dedicate themselves to a single deity as they feel a strong affinity and can identify with particular characteristics. But any of the Gods and Goddesses can be called upon to assist you in your work. As a Wicca beginner it may be useful to try including as many as possible into your rituals to see of you feel a particular partiality.

Will I have to perform spells?

No. Not all Wiccans believe in spell casting so you should not feel under pressure to do this. But if you do find that you do have an ability in this area however, you will find plenty of information on spells for Wicca beginners until you get to the stage where you are writing your own!

Is there scripture for me to abide by?

The only book that Wiccans work from is a Book of Shadows and this is generally a very personal thing. A coven may have a joint one to work from, but very commonly you will have your own. It is a place for you to write your spells, keep notes and make observations. Whether or not there has even been a ‘real’ or ancient Book of Shadows, a central text to work from, is a hotly debated topic. However, none has been proven to exist.

Whatever your reasons for being a Wicca beginner, I’m sure you will find your life as enriched and informed as any one of us who has chosen this path for any number of reasons! You will find that there are as many ways to live a Wiccan lifestyle as there are Wiccans so enjoy every day of your personal and spiritual journey.

Want to Perform Wicca Spells?

May 4th, 2010

If you wish to perform Wicca spells, you must first learn to abide by some basic principles. While this may sound a little restrictive you will actually find that they will increase the efficacy and even enjoyment of casting your Wicca spells. So before we go on to the actual spells themselves, here are some of the basics for you to consider:

  • The Wiccan Rede (meaning advice) – “An it harm none, do what ye will”
  • Law of Threefold Return – whatever you do will come back to you with 3 times the power, so always consider of the implications and consequences.
  • The Eight Virtues – mirth, reverence, honour, humility, strength, beauty, power and compassion. Seek to include these values not only in your spell work but also in your life in general. You will be surprised at how much you can improve your life with this rule alone.
  • Five Core Elements – The pentagram is the symbol of Wicca and it represents the core elements of the universe: earth, air, fire, water and spirit. These are to be respected always. Learn to work and channel their unique powers.

Casting a Circle

Not always essential but it can be very powerful and affirming to have a sacred and consecrated space to work within. In much the same way people use a Church or religious place of worship to pray, this can give a sense of peace and safety. There are many ways and opinions on how to cast a circle so explore as many as possible and find the right way for you. But think of a place in your home that will be quiet and private for you to work in.

Wicca Altars and Tools

Again, a Wicca altar is not always completely essential but seeing as you cannot expect to be successful without preparation and practise it can be a good idea to set up a designated area to work on your Wicca spells.

You may not have any Wicca tools to work with yet with but you can substitute them with other objects that will do the job almost as well. Just make sure you consecrate them first. Smudging with lavender and sage is a simple but effective way.

You will want to represent the elements in the work space you choose for your Wicca spells though – salt for earth, incense or a feather for air, a candle for fire and place some water in a goblet or bowl.

A Word On Writing Your Own Wicca Spells

Followers of Wicca often write their own spells. This is because it is good to have a close, personal connection with your spells and to build experience first hand. You can also tailor your Wicca spells to your particular needs and make them more personal. This will often be more focused and powerful than merely emulating another’s work so give it a go. Start simple and find what feels comfortable and natural for you. Experiment to find what ingredients you work best with, see maybe if you are drawn to a particular element and what preparations for casting a Wicca spell work best. In short, just go for it!

Wicca Spells

However much I tell you to go and see for yourself, I also appreciate that it is confusing to start with. You have probably come to this article looking for a Wicca spell to get you started so I have included a simple candle spell that works within the Wiccan way.

Preparation is essential so relax by either taking a long bath or use meditation. When you feel you are in the right frame of mind, set out your work space with a candle, a candle holder, a scroll with your statement of intent (what you are hoping to achieve) on it and any visual prompts you require such as photos or tarot cards.

Once you are ready to begin, hold the candle and say:

“O gracious Goddess, Gracious God,

I consecrate this candle in your name,

May it burn as brightly as the flame in your soul.”

Place the candle in the holder before you and then light it. Say:

“Blessed flame of sacred power,

Burning in the presence of the Goddess,

I bring you my prayer, know my need,

I ask of you this magic deed.”

If you feel you are particularly drawn to a particular God or Goddess then you can insert their name and ask for their blessings. Read out your statement of intent, referring to your visual prompts for closer affinity if needed. Then you need to complete the spell to close down the energies:

“I ask only good to come of this spell and by the will of the God and Goddess I proclaim it complete. Mote it be!”

I hope this gives you the confidence to get started in your Wicca path and that you enjoy your experience. Don’t let your search for knowledge and interest in Wicca spells stop here. For free spells and more info, please click the link for my blog. You’re most welcome there!

Introduction to Wicca, Magic, and Spells

May 4th, 2010

Magic spells have fascinated us for thousands of years. People are intrigued and obsessed in how spells could work for and against a person’s interest and desires. Magic spells are not only performed to achieve personal gain, they are also practiced as part of a religious belief system such as Wicca.

Wicca is deeply rooted to ancient pagan beliefs which emerged hundreds of years ago. Gerald Gardner claimed that the practices and beliefs of Wicca were based from a secretive group that had accepted him as a member. Wiccan spells are often referred to as “magick” rather than the common “magic.” This differentiates real magic from common conjuring and illusion tricks practiced by stage performers in shows.

When Wicca was first developed, the government and public society at large was scared by it and so persecuted witches and wizards, putting them to death. Even now although witch-hunting no longer occurs it is common for Wicca followers to practice their arts in secret so as to avoid scrutiny or ridicule from unbelievers. All Wiccans agree that Satan-worship is not part of their practices.

Nature and its elements: earth, air, fire, and water, are loved and revered in Wicca. Wiccans consider themselves “at one” with nature. Harming nature would cause nature to harm them back, so all Wicca spells are white magic and are intended for good purposes only.

All who practice magic spells do so in strict accordance with “The Wiccan Rede.” This deep rooted law of Wiccan magic states, “do what ye will, harm ye none.” This simply means that magic spells can be used freely as long as no one gets hurt in the process. A related commandment is “The Law of Three” which states that “harm will be returned three-fold”, further encouragement to only use magic for good.

Magic is similar to Christian prayers. Spells are part of Wiccan rituals although not all Wiccans cast spells. Spells can be both used to help or hurt and manipulate other people, but Wiccan followers are strictly prohibited from using spells that will harm other people in accordance with “The Rede.”

Before a Wiccan performs any magic spell, incantation or ritual, they first reflect on their intentions and the consequences and repercussions of the act. All its possible effects are thoroughly considered to make sure the spell is good and pure. Most spells are followed precisely as they are written, although there are times when the spells can be modified to fit the witch or wizard’s power, personality and situation.

Some people may show wonder, disbelief, or even fear of the powers that Wiccans possess. But understanding the basic beliefs and principles of Wiccans shows us that what they do is not against the fundamental principles of all moral and wise teachings for human beings, which is to share life and embrace nature without harming others.
